GPOYW - “Happy birthday, Autumn” Edition

This is my friend Autumn. We met on the Internet. I don’t even remember how I found her, actually, but I’m guessing she followed me on The Twitter and I followed her back because I thought she was cute.

Oh, shut up. You know you do it sometimes, too.

Anyway, it turns out she’s more than just cute. She’s brilliant without being pretentious and funny without being cruel and she has the most impeccable taste in popular culture, especially movies and books and music. (Oh, and she’s generous with her rare MP3s, which doesn’t hurt.) Basically, she’s everything you could want in an Internet friend. You know, assuming she actually exists.

But I wasn’t sure about that until last week, when I finally got to meet her in real life. And sure enough, she’s awesome in person, too. She was happy to let me tag along wherever she went, and she always came over to draw me out of my shell whenever I was feeling shy, and she somehow completely tolerated me being a drunken ass for at least half the weekend — and she did it all in the sweetest  way with the kindest smile on her face.

I mean, honestly … it was almost enough to make me forgive her for being a KU fan.

Almost.

But happy birthday, anyway, Autumn. You’re amazing. Thanks for being my friend.

gpoyw: my favorite cup edition | fun fact: i can’t live without coffee.

yes, it’s true. my life revolves around the little brown beans. i can’t go one morning without it. well, i could if i had to, but i would not be a happy camper.

this is my chicago mug that cliff brought back for me. i have never been to the windy city, unfortunately, but i will go before i die. why is it one of my favorites? because it’s bigger than most other mugs so it holds about an additional 1/2 cup of coffee. believe it or not, i actually have another one that’s bigger, but that’s for another day.

also, that mug is currently really full and is really heavy. which is why i had to use two hands, unless i wanted coffee all over my laptop.. which i didn’t. and yes, that is me with no make up. which is also why the mug is covering most of my face.

My usual pharmacist was back today after a long leave.

“Did you get a haircut?” she asked.

No no, I said. It’s just finally long enough again for me to be able to put junk in it for it to look springy.

My mother had asked if I had gotten a haircut last week, too.

Oh wait! That’s right. Last time you saw me I had long hair, didn’t I?

“Yeah! It looks good,” my pharmacist said.

“You look like an MIT physics professor.”

GPOY-grace-is-the-sigh-of-relief-between-two-challenges edition

i’m flying to New York City tomorrow. if it isn’t Spring there i will bring it with me from Chicago. don’t need to check the forecast. i am taking two successive vacation days and i am not checking my email once until Monday.

this is not a vacation. i am not going sightseeing. i am going to visit with old friends and meet new ones. i am making a house call with my best friend at my side. i will read a book on a porch in Brooklyn. i will watch the sun rise alone and watch it set with company. exquisite company at that. i will drink, smoke and cuss until my voice is hoarse and my tab comes due. or i won’t.

now that is luxury.

This summer, I worked with Leif Pettersen on this new Lonely Planet project. According to page 453 of Lonely Planet Tuscany & Umbria, my “exhaustive proofing and editorial consulting” was worthy of thanks.

Well I’d like to thank Leif for teaching me how a guidebook comes together—slowly and with much anguish!—and for keeping me busy working with words while I tracked down a full-time job.

While Leif and the editors managed to pack a lot of stuff in the book, you can check out what didn’t make it over here.

And, yes, I’m gonna do something about my hair really soon.
